College Students Experience the Joy of the Dominican Charism

The 22nd Annual College Preaching in Action Conference took place at Molloy University from Tuesday, May 21st through Sunday, May 26th. It was a joy-filled event that brought together 35 students from 10 colleges and universities including Aquinas College, NY; Albertus Magnus College, CT; Caldwell University, NJ; Dominican University, NY, Mount Saint Mary’s College, NY; Molloy University, NY; Ohio Dominican University, OH; Siena Heights University, MI; St. Thomas Aquinas College, NY; and Xavier University, LA.
Throughout the five very full days of the conference, students and their mentors had the opportunity to learn about the Dominican charism from an array of presenters. Many of our very own sisters, associates and employees preached and helped at the event including S. Margaret Galiardi, OP; S. Barbara Schwarz, OP; Jessica Abejar; Angela Besole, OPA; S. Alice Byrnes, OP; S. Diane Capuano, OP; S. Maryanna Euring, OP; Kathleen Friend, OPA; Elizabeth Keihm, OPA; Leone Mathon, OPA; Communicator Lena-Pennino-Smith; Nora Toal, OPA; Carol Radosti, OP; Recreational Coordinator Joan Regan and S. Gina Fleming.
Participants then had the opportunity to serve in the local community, including at our Motherhouse where they met our sisters! Other students learned about ecology at the Center for Environmental Research and Coastal Oceans Monitoring (CERCOM), sorted through donations at the food pantry of St. Rose of Lima Church in Massapequa, helped out at the soup kitchen Soup to Nuts, and did yard work and maintenance at Maria Regina Church in Seaford. Later that night, a group of 10 students went on a Midnight Run to Manhattan, where they had the experience of meeting people without shelter on the streets to provide food and clothing.
