Dominican Commercial Tribute April 24, 2018

The doors may be closed, but the spirit of Dominican Commercial High School in Jamaica, NY will shine on forever. On Sunday, April 22nd, alumnae took one last nostalgic stroll down the halls of “DC.” The day provided a unique opportunity for graduates, teachers and staff to share memories and stories of high school days and of their lives today.

The school first opened in 1936. By the 1940’s, Dominican Commercial was one of the two largest parochial schools in Jamaica, NY. The school focused on preparing students for careers directly out of high school. “The school was a remarkable place,” said Mary Makowski, who graduated in 1966. “It was a no-nonsense school and run like clockwork. You got more than an education. You got your morals, your leadership qualities.”

Graduates from the 1940’s to the last class of 1998, when the school officially closed, were in attendance at the event. With the help of the event committee, co-chairs, staff and volunteers, the DC Tribute was truly a wonderful event which raised over $30,000.

Proceeds from the recent sale of the 88,000-square-foot property will assist still-active Sisters to continue working in their ministries and will help pay the escalating health-care costs of Sisters in their later years.
