Thanks to the generosity of the DeJana Foundation and many other individual donors and foundations, the Dominican Sisters of Amityville are able to repair two elevators that are essential to our elderly sisters, support staff who assist them, and anyone entering our Motherhouse to pray, to work and/or to visit. Due to a supply chain disruption, there was a delay in the start of the project, but we are happy to announce that the renovation of the main elevator, located in the rotunda of the Motherhouse, was completed this month.
“The scope of the work was to modernize the elevators due to aging equipment. Otis Elevator Company upgraded all the mechanical components, as well as the controls and cables. With the exception of the interior cab, everything else is brand new,” said Mary Fuchs, Director of Advancement. She went on to add, “This modernization will make elevator malfunctions a thing of the past!”
Phase two of construction will begin this month for the second elevator, located near the dining hall. As per the team at Otis, work should be completed in approximately eight weeks.
“We look forward to having two new elevators,” said Jennifer Friedman, Executive Director of the Motherhouse Complex. “We are extremely grateful to the sisters and staff who have been very patient during the project. We are also grateful to Mike and Bernard from Otis who have been very professional and courteous during the work.”
Once all work has been finalized, the Congregation will have a ribbon-cutting ceremony and reception at the Motherhouse for our financial supporters.
