One Island Giving Day October 19, 2017

The Sisters of St. Dominic of Amityville are honored to take part in One Island Giving Day, a one-day virtual event that aims to raise over $1 million dollars for local, Long Island-based nonprofits to help create a stronger Long Island for ALL Long Islanders. Local organizations, businesses, and community groups are coming together to challenge anyone and everyone who loves Long Island to unite and give to the local nonprofit or cause they care about most.

The campaign is coordinated by The Hagedorn Foundation in partnership with area nonprofits.

Over the past 164 years, a variety of ministries evolved enabling our Sisters to continue to help and serve the local community. Below are some of the ministries owned, operated, and/or administered by Sisters on Long Island:

Dominican Village, Amityville, NY is a non-sectarian, not-for-profit, independent and assisted living retirement community with respite care. The 13-acre campus caters to the diverse needs of all residents and offers various activities and programs.

OPening Word, Wyandanch, Amityville and Huntington Station, NY is a non-sectarian, not-for-profit that increases literacy and job readiness skills for immigrant women. OPening Word provides women with the tools needed to become productive members of society, financially sustainable, and enhances self-esteem and life skills.

Homecoming Farm, Amityville, NY is a non-sectarian, not-for-profit, community-supported agricultural project that includes an organic farm and educational outreach programs. The farm has expanded its reach to the local community and to seniors. Homecoming continues to encourage environmental sustainability and is donating 20% of its produce to the homeless.

Harvest House offers the well elderly privacy, companionship, security and quality of life in a non-denominational and affordable shared-housing environment. This innovative model, a non-institutional senior housing alternative promoting community living, is a true family experience. Seniors are provided with the option to remain living in the community with established and familiar support.

Bethany House is a not-for-profit organization that provides safe, supportive, emergency housing at five LI locations for women and their dependent children, and a comprehensive range of additional programs and resources.

North Fork Spanish Apostolate works daily with the immigrant community of the East End through programs for healthcare, early childhood education, tutoring programs, social justice, community organizing, leadership development and job training, and skills development.
