Sister Kathleen Somerville, OP was honored by State Senator Anna Kaplan as a 2021 Commendation Award recipient this Wednesday, December 15, 2021. For 40 years, Sister Kathy has ministered as the Director of Parish Outreach in Our Lady of Fatima Roman Catholic Church in Port Washington.
When we caught up with Sister Kathy today, she was in the midst of a busy Advent season. On Christmas Day, Parish Outreach will deliver meals donated from Chateau Briand to the homebound. The warm meals will be delivered to senior centers, adult apartment buildings, and to private homes with not only seniors but their aides as well. This ministry has been going on for years and now some who volunteered as kids, are back with their own families to help. This past Sunday, Parish Outreach provided donated gift cards to 130 families just in time for the holidays!
“My job as Director of Parish Outreach is really to facilitate what goes on in addressing the needs of the people in the Manorhaven area,” said Sister Kathy. “But I can only do that because of the ongoing generosity and support of the Port Washington Community and the wonderful, dedicated people who work and volunteer in our office to make everything happen.”
“So, on behalf of them, I am honored to receive this recognition from Senator Kaplan,” she continued. “Hopefully, this award also will shed light on the needs of this community and will help further our ministry as we continue to do our best to make life better for the people of Manorhaven.”
