Sisters Celebrate at Lessons & Carols December 22, 2016

After a year of celebrations, The Sisters of St. Dominic closed the 800th anniversary of the Order of Preachers during their “Lessons and Carols” on Sunday, December 11th in St. Albert’s Chapel at the Amityville Motherhouse.

While the local Congregation is 163 years old, our Amityville Sisters are part of the larger, worldwide Order of Brothers and Sisters who share the same founder, St. Dominic, of an order that was approved by Pope Honorius III in December 1216.

“It was important to take time during this jubilee year to be in touch with the entire Dominican Family as we celebrate our founder and all those who have committed themselves to the Dominican life and charism,” said Sister Pat Hanvey, Assistant Prioress of the Sisters of St. Dominic of Amityville.

In celebration of the jubilee, the Sisters held the grand opening of the Dominican Library in Rosary Hall which features the writings and works of many Dominicans. They also hosted a Founders Day Art Show which displayed the numerous artworks of Sisters, Associates, and Dominican Young Adults. The long legacy of Dominican spirituality and ministry will continue to grow into the 21st century, nurtured by the Charism that keeps the Order vibrant.
