Sisters Meet Cardinal of El Salvador August 30, 2017

The Cardinal of El Salvador, Gregorio Rosa Chavez, visited the Diocese of Rockville Centre to be with the Spanish-speaking people here in their fears and struggles with gangs and immigration issues.

While on Long Island Cardinal Chavez addressed issues and also spoke of the need to seek justice for the slaying of Blessed Oscar Romero, the beloved Bishop of El Salvador who cried out against social injustice and who was martyred in 1980. No one yet has been arrested for the assassination of Bishop Romero.

For many years, the Amityville Dominicans have been in accompaniment with the people of El Salvador. This past weekend that commitment was renewed. Our Sisters met with the Cardinal at Catholic Charities, Sunday Liturgies, and some attended a reception for pastoral ministers on Friday evening at the Parish Hall of St. Agnes Cathedral. Those who attended were: Sister Flor de Maria Buruca, Sister Alice Fairchild, Sister Dismas Marschauser, Sister Carolann Masone and Sister Margaret Smythe.
